Dif:use - Febrile
In September 2003, our wandering herd dropped its suitcases and settled in the gothic manor once occupied, first by a bloke called Julien Dillens, and last in line by a certain Dr Merlin. I know this sounds like complete fabrication, but it’s not. Anyway, Dr Merlin, our patron saint, our voodoo godfather, our mentor beyond the grave, has since left an undeniable imprint on our collective psyche. Now we ain’t exactly Hospital, but let’s just say that the smell of formaldehyde, the coarse touch of thick gauze, cold, metallic instruments, sepia colours and a flat iron taste in the back of the mouth have left an undeniable mark. Inevitably, medical terms come to mind when asked to describe fleeting emotions, weekly shopping lists, sexual preferences, the occasional serious project. When Don asked us to come up with a name for their first ambient album, one word came to mind: febrile. Maybe because it was late Sunday morning, or early Sunday afternoon, or whatever people usually qualify that time of day ; maybe because I’ve been dragging this damn cold for the last six months ; maybe because these are feverish sounds for feverish people in feverish states ; maybe, maybe not.
