Stagger Lee is the title of a traditional American song . The lyrics are based on a story that took place in 1895 . There are many times under different titles ( Stack O’Lee , Stack-a-Lee , Stagolee …), the most famous is that ofLloyd Price .

The song is based on the true story of Lee Shelton , black pimp of St. Louis , Missouri , convicted of murdering his friend William Lyons on. Shelton died in prison in 1912 of tuberculosis.

First versions

It seems that the song was born immediately after the fact. In 1897 , the Kansas City Leavenworth Herald mentions a piece titled Stack-a-Lee performed by “Prof. Charlie Lee, the piano thumper “. One of the earliest versions that has come down to us is that recorded in 1910 by the John Lomax folklorist for the American Library of Congress . The first version with lyrics is that of Lovie Austin , Skeeg-a-Lee Blues , in 1924.
