The Freak is a song recorded in 1978 by the disco / funk Chic group .

This piece, one of the best known of the group with the following Good Times , is considered the single best selling Atlantic label with more than seven million copies 1 , 500,000 certified in France 2 . The single is No. 1 of Billboard Hot 100 three times between December 1978 and February 1979 3 , 4 .

History

Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards , guitarist and bassist founders of Chic, composed this song which was originally called Fuck off (in English, ” Fuck you”) after being repressed from Studio 54 . “We had a date with Grace Jones , but she did not leave our name with the porter, who refused to let us in,” says guitarist Nile Rodgers.”We were so frustrated: it was Studio 54, it was New Year’s Eve, it was Grace Jones, and we were out there, with the most expensive clothes we had and stylish shoes, completely soaked in the snow. We went home furious and started working this riff singing Fuck Off! it was a protest song. Subsequently, we replaced “Aaaaahh, fuck off! By “Aaaaahh, freak out! . And here’s a Zen lesson : we did not have what we wanted at the moment, which ultimately allowed us to get more than we ever imagined. ” 5

The chorus ” aaaahh Fuck Off! Fuck Studio 54 !! ” Is finally replaced by Freak Out! Freak is chic! 6 : in the lyrics that have finally been recorded, softened to broadcast the title on the radio, the Freak (“monster” or “maniac” in English) refers to a new dance. The expression freak out , it means raving, behaving irrationally, and can be translated by blowing lead .

The song has become a classic of dance and disco , taken many times.
